Foundation & pathways

Not quite ready for direct entry? A foundation year, pathway program, pre-sessional English course or college route can lead into a degree. How each one works, and the visa rules that apply to it.

What a pathway is

A bridge into a degree, not a detour

A pathway is a course that prepares you for a degree and, when you meet its progression requirements, can lead to a place on that degree. Pathways suit students whose grades, English score or subject background don’t yet match direct entry.

They add time and cost, so it is worth checking first whether you already qualify for direct entry somewhere that suits you. A counsellor can help you compare both routes honestly.

Types of pathway

Six routes into a degree

Names vary between universities and providers. What matters is where the course leads and on what conditions.

01 · UK

International foundation year

A preparatory year before a bachelor’s, combining subject modules with academic English and study skills. Run by universities themselves or by partner colleges, usually on campus.

02 · UK

International year one

Some pathway programs replace the first year of a bachelor’s, so students who pass at the required level join the second year.

03 · UK

Pre-master’s

A shorter preparatory program for graduates who don’t yet meet the entry requirements for a master’s.

04 · UK · US · Canada

Pre-sessional English

An intensive English course before your degree, for students who have an offer but need a higher English score.

05 · US

Community college, then transfer

A two-year associate degree at a community college, then transfer into a bachelor’s at a university.

06 · Canada

College diplomas and certificates

Public colleges offer diplomas and certificates; some institutions have agreements that let graduates continue into a degree.

Pathways by country

How pathways work in each country

Visa rules as of October 2026. Pathways are offered by individual universities and colleges, so details vary.

Common routes
Conditional admission with an intensive English program, pathway programs at some universities, and community college followed by transfer.
Your visa
Only an SEVP-certified school can issue the Form I-20 you need for an F-1 visa. English programs and community colleges can be certified, so check before you apply.

Ask whether credits transfer and whether your place on the degree is guaranteed or only conditional.

Common routes
International foundation years, international year one, pre-master’s and pre-sessional English.
Your visa
If your course is below degree level, the Student visa English requirement is CEFR B1 rather than B2, and term-time work is limited to 10 hours a week with a university sponsor (20 at degree level).

A pre-sessional English course of up to 3 months and your degree can share one CAS and one visa if the degree starts within a month of the pre-sessional ending and you have a Secure English Language Test at B1 or above. Otherwise you need two applications.

CanadaStudy in Canada →
Common routes
College diplomas and certificates, university programs with conditional admission and English study, and transfer agreements at some institutions.
Your visa
You don’t need a study permit for a program of 6 months or less. Most post-secondary students need a provincial attestation letter (PAL) with their study permit application.

English or French as a second language programs don’t lead to a PGWP and don’t allow off-campus work. College programs must be in an eligible field of study for a PGWP.

Certificate & diploma programs in official data

The closest match in our data is certificates and diplomas at US and Canadian institutions. They are not the same as foundation years: some are standalone qualifications, and some can lead into a degree. Check progression on each program page.

Is a pathway right for you?

Questions to ask before you commit

Pathway programs usually accept lower grades or English scores than direct entry, and each sets its own minimums.

Good reasons to choose one

Your Class 12 or degree grades are below direct-entry requirements, your English score is just short, you are changing subject, or you want smaller classes and more support in your first year abroad.

Is progression guaranteed?

Ask what grade you need to progress, whether the place is guaranteed at that grade, and which degrees you can progress to. Sometimes only some courses are open to pathway students.

Time and total cost

Add up the pathway and the degree together, including living costs for the extra time, and compare it with direct entry elsewhere. Our education loans guide covers funding.

Visa and work rights

Below-degree courses can carry different rules: fewer work hours in the UK, no PGWP after language-only programs in Canada. Check how your specific course is treated before you pay a deposit.

Not sure whether you need a pathway?

A counsellor can check your grades and English score against direct-entry requirements first, so you only take a pathway if it genuinely helps.
